How & Where to shop the Best Snowboard/Ski Goggles

It’s only the beginning of Fall, but already we’re thinking about the best snowboard/ski goggles and daydreaming of swishing through some nice fluffy powder!

We all want to look good while we’re out there, and there are tons of choices and options for snow goggles, and knowing how to choose the best snowboard/ski goggles and where to get them can sometimes be difficult!

Whether you need prescription or non-prescription, we’ll tell you what to look for in a good quality goggle, and also give some of our most fashionable favorite best snowboarding/ski goggles for everyone.

  • UV Protection: As we all know, the sunlight reflects off the snow, creating enormous glare. This is especially true at higher elevations as ultraviolet (UV) concentrations increase as altitude increases.  Therefore, make sure your goggles have 100% UV protection to give your eyes the proper protection. (For more information, see UV and its Effects on the Eyes).
  • Polycarbonate Lenses: This is the only type of lens that should be worn when skiing or snowboarding. Both glass and plastic lenses can shatter upon impact and can penetrate the eye in a crash. Polycarbonate lenses are the most impact-resistant and will not shatter upon impact. Polycarbonate also is more resistant to fogging than any other lens and offers 100% UV protection.
  • Polarized Lenses: Have you ever been blinded by the sun reflecting off the snow even though you are wearing sunglasses or ski goggles? Glare manifests itself in what is called polarized light and is most noticeable on highly reflective surfaces such as water and snow. Regular sun lenses do not provide adequate absorption of that glare which is why you find yourself still squinting. Polarized lenses will help by absorbing 98% of the glare reflected off the snow. Note: The one downside of polarized lenses is that they absorb so much glare that you may not be able to distinguish patches of ice from regular snow.
  • Lens Color: Some goggles let you easily switch out your lenses so you can have just one goggle regardless of the conditions – whether it’s a Blue Bird day or if you’re riding the storm. Think about what conditions you ride in most often. If you only go out in bright sunlight, you’ll want to choose a lens that is brown or amber in color as this will provide the best contrast against snow and is better for when the sun goes behind the clouds. Vermilion or rose-based lenses are good for overcast to flat light.  In really low light conditions, yellow will help create contrast.  Are you the type of person who goes out in all conditions? A Photochromatic lens might be the answer – it will change color as the light changes, getting darker in bright sunlight, and becoming lighter in an overcast sky.   Clear lenses are recommended for night skiing for obvious reasons!
  • Goggles: Make sure the goggle is well ventilated to help prevent fogging. Having actual vents in the lenses is great.  If you wear contact lenses, you need to make sure that your goggle is well ventilated so your contacts don’t dry out.
  • Prescription Lenses:  Do you wear glasses instead of contacts? No problem! Some goggles are made to fit over your glasses (look for goggles that say “OTG” for “Over the Glasses”). Another option is to use a prescription insert that fits inside of the goggle.

We looked at the best snowboard/ski goggles from different manufacturers, and here are some that we thought stood out. All of them come in different goggle colors and multiple lens options and can accept a prescription insert if needed.

Bolle Duchess: These goggles have a small to medium fit and180 degree wide field of view with Anti-fog and 100 UV protection.

Julbo Ventilate: Cool feature lets the lens pop away from the frame to help reduce fogging when standing in line or resting.

Spy Bravo: Superfast lens changing system so you can keep skiing when the weather changes. Also, it comes with Spy’s ‘Happy Lenses’ that allow good blue light in and keeps the bad blue light out to keep you feeling happy all day.

Smith Skyline: Really sleek design with lots of lens options including their new ChromaPop technology lens.

Uvex Downhill 2000 S: This has a nostalgic design with a full mirror lens and anti-fog technology.

This is just a few of the many, many options out there! Find the best snowboard/ski goggles that are the best for you and get there and have some fun on the slopes, while looking great!
