New Innovative Technology for Breast Cancer Recovery

Hundreds of Thousands of Women Will Be Diagnosed with Breast Cancer this Year

Innovative Technology Aims to Help Women with Recovery

While Breast Cancer Awareness Month isn’t until October, breast cancer is a topic that needs attention all-year-round, especially during the carefree summer months when people aren’t putting their health first. It impacts hundreds of thousands of people and 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

Radiation therapy has revolutionized breast cancer treatment and because of it, many women with early-stage cancer can be treated with breast-conservation surgery rather than mastectomy.

Here is what I learned in my interview with Dr. Sharla Patterson, a Breast Surgeon with NCH Physician Group in Naples. FL.

·       How has radiation therapy, breast-conserving surgery, and oncoplastic techniques revolutionized breast cancer treatment?

These techniques have been found to all three work very well together in place of a traditional mastectomy. These techniques help reduce radiation and risk. Oncoplastic surgery is a plastic surgery that treats the breast affected with cancer and helps it to feel and look more like it did before surgery by getting rid of unsightly dimples, lumps, etc.

·       What is BioZorb and how does it work?

Although breast-conserving surgery has been around for some time, recent technology, like the BioZorb marker, is helping to improve outcomes and minimize side effects. This tiny device looks like a small spiral of plastic, but is a very efficient device that is planted and basically acts like a GPS for breast cancer, ensuring more precise (and potentially shorter) radiation treatments, by targeting the cancer in the breast for radiation so other unaffected areas surrounding the targeted area aren’t hit with radiation. And thanks to new oncoplastic surgery techniques, it also helps improve the cosmetic outcomes of surgery – giving women the unprecedented opportunity to look and feel like themselves post-treatment.

  • Who can benefit from Biozorb?

This treatment is appropriate for someone who is diagnosed with breast cancer and also qualifies for breast-conserving surgery.

Made me sad but also made me happy. Lost a cousin some years back to breast cancer, maybe today we would not have lost her.
