How to Store Clothes You Don't Need

Your closet is probably filled with clothes you haven’t worn in a while and aren’t planning to start anytime soon. Whether the clothes in question are old and falling apart or just seasonal, you should introduce additional storage solutions and free your closet. Not only will you have more space for your favourite pieces, but your closet will be well-organised and structured.

Discover the Hidden Storage

If you look around your room, you’ll probably notice plenty of unused space. Do you see that empty space under your bed? You can add several rolling drawers, plastic containers or boxes to store your winter clothes, old bags or excess accessories. Have you always wanted a lovely bench by the window? Then buy one with a hidden storage compartment where you can place heavy sweaters. Your options are endless and all you need to do is take a look at your room from a different perspective.

Maximise the Closet Space

Despite looking quite full, your closet probably still has a lot of unused space. However, before turning everything around, you should sort out your clothes. The best approach is organising your closet according to seasonal clothes. If you’re getting your closet ready for fall, you should move your summer clothes somewhere else.

To maximise storage space in your closet, you need to store and organise your clothes efficiently. For example, if there’s a lot of empty space in the upper part of your closet, you can add a top shelf and use it for seasonal clothes. To keep it organised and prevent piles of clothes toppling over, you can use shelf dividers. Similarly, if there’s unused space at the bottom of your closet, introduce additional baskets, boxes or plastic containers. If your closet is quite deep, you can place the clothes you don’t wear further behind, while keeping the pieces you often use in the front. You can organise your closet for summer and keep winter clothes deep in the back.

Repurpose the Old

You probably have some old pieces lying around collecting dust. Well, you should find them and transform them into improvised closets. If you have an old bookshelf somewhere in the house, use it for storing old and seasonal clothes rather than books. If you have an old trunk, you can easily use it to hide your worn-out clothes. Not only will it be an additional storage piece, but it will also add character to your room. You can do the same thing with vintage suitcases – fill them with seasonal clothes and then place them by your bed and use them as nightstands.

Think Outside Your Room

Don’t hesitate to use other rooms and their storage space. We tend to keep our clothes within the limits of our bedrooms, piling up our closets and creating chaos. If there’s plenty of storage in your living room, hallway or even dining room, what are you waiting for? Use it! You’ll free a lot of space in your bedroom and give purpose to all those empty shelves and drawers. You can even introduce additional pieces to your other rooms. For example, you can move a stylish dresser to your living room and use it both as a TV stand and to store your old clothes. Another great option is moving it to your hallway and then placing decorative items on top of it.

Rent a Storage Unit

If you have piles of old clothes and nowhere to store them, you can always rent a storage unit. For example, you can rent both temporary and long-term storage in Brisbane depending on your needs. This way, you’ll free a lot of space in your house and have a place to store your clothes until you decide what to do with them. You should find out whether there’s such an option in your area and then start organising your closet.

Instead of taking up too much space in your closet with clothes you never wear, introduce additional storage solutions. Not only will they free your closet, but they will also create an atmosphere of organisation and tidiness.

  1. Great tips! I store my out of season clothes in the back of the hallway closet.. Then I just switch around when the weather changes. I don’t have enough clothes to need a storage unit, though.

  2. My husband maxed out the storage in all of our closets using that high top shelf, two rows of rods and bottom shoe storage racks.
