Tips for Kitchen Remodels on a Budget

Tips for Kitchen Remodels on a Budget

Many homeowners complete at least one major home renovation project at some point during their time in their home. Major projects, such as additions, gutting and redoing a room, adding a deck, and foundation work can be quite costly. There are other home improvement projects, such as kitchen remodels, that can be done at different budget levels. If you want to give your kitchen a new look without the big budget, here are a few tips to follow.

Freshen up Your Cabinets

Cabinets are one of the most expensive components of a kitchen remodel. Rather than tossing out perfectly good cabinets in favor of new ones, see if you can salvage the ones you have. If they’re in good condition but you don’t like the style, chances are you can give them a facelift and save yourself a lot of money. Take off the doors and opt to go for open shelving, which is a popular kitchen cabinet trend right now. You can also refinish them with a new coat of paint and hardware, which you can find in a variety of designs to give your cabinets a pop of personality. Making use of your existing cabinets can save you a lot of money and help the environment by reducing what goes into our landfills.

Dig In

If you’re sick of your old linoleum flooring, don’t go running to the flooring store just yet. You may have a beautiful floor hidden underneath layers of peel and stick tile. Many older homes in particular often have beautiful hardwood flooring that has been covered up over the years by well-meaning homeowners who didn’t understand the value of their home’s natural beauty. It can be quite labor-intensive to remove old flooring and restore your wooden floors, but it could save you thousands of dollars and add value to your home by showcasing its hidden beauty.

Try Tiling

One of the most noticeable areas of a kitchen is the counter backsplash because it’s eye level. You can create an incredible kitchen remodel simply by investing in a beautiful, timeless backsplash (See my kitchen tile remodel in my post here). Add some style to your kitchen by picking out a beautiful tile to use as your backsplash. This will add some personality to your kitchen and provide an interesting focal point.

Find Your Wow Factor

Choose one piece of your kitchen that you want to really stand out. Whether it’s a brass farmhouse sink, butcher block counters, or oversized island, choose a focal point and design the rest of your kitchen around your standout piece. Having a wow factor in your kitchen can spruce it up and create a conversation piece, much like a piece of art would in any other room of the house.

Upcycle Pieces

You shouldn’t underestimate the power of garage sale and flea markets. You may find the perfect piece for your kitchen at one, such as vintage ad to hang on your wall, wire baskets to display produce, or a gorgeous old-style stove that will remind you of grandma’s house. Take advantage of your local salvage stores and check them often, since most cycle through stock on a frequent basis.

Get Handy

If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at woodworking, now may be the time to break out the power tools and put your skills to the test. Making some of the bigger kitchen items yourself, such as your island or storage racks, can save you hundreds of dollars. Not to mention, you’ll have pride knowing that your completed project was created thanks to your skills.

If you know how to be savvy, are willing to put in some elbow grease, and have an eye for finding the right pieces to tie a room together, you can have a gorgeous kitchen on a budget. People will marvel at what they’ll think was a big budget kitchen, while you know the truth about your budget-friendly remodel project.

  1. My kitchen is a mess and way too small. Our house was built in 1900 and I think the current kitchen is an add on and used to be further in. Remodeling isnt in the budget, but I am painting nex year.
