Being a vegetarian, I learned right away that without some protein in my diet, I would become extremely ravenous and eat anything and everything in the kitchen, but nothing would quite satiate me. If you go meat free, first off, me and the animals love you, but secondly, you’ve still got to get some form of protein in your diet.
While there are lots of shakes out there still made of animal protein, if you are vegan or vegetarian, you can still find great options that don’t contain egg, dairy, or animal proteins.
I’ve tried a few, and if you’ve ever had a vegan protein shake, they definitely have a bit of a different taste. Some brands will add lots of sugar to it to make it taste a little better, but if you’re heath conscious like I am, you certainly don’t want, or need, extra sugar.
I was so excited to try out my Naturade Vegan Smart All in 1 Nutritional shakes, because they are vegan, obviously, and because they come in some really great flavors, like Chocolate, vanilla, and my favorite, chai! They also are super low in sugar! Most have only 5 or 6 grams of sugar per serving, which is really pretty amazing.
I love that these shakes are packed with vitamins, minerals, omega 3s (which a lot of us vegetarians/vegans tend to be low on, thanks to cutting fish from our diets), probiotics, fiber (6 grams!), and more! These yummy shakes are also gluten free and contain zero trans fat or cholesterol.
If you are calorie conscious, theses babies are a low 160 calories per serving. That’s a great, low-calorie way to start your day!
I loved that starting my day with one of these yummy shakes kept me full all morning. (Which we all know protein is good for). But the million dollar question of course is, how does it taste, right?
Like I said, if you haven’t had plant based protein shakes before, they certainly have a different taste than your regular protein shakes, but its not bad, just different.
I actually drank my chocolate shake just plain and loved it. It’s obviously not over sweetened with only 5 g of sugar, so if you expect to drink something sweet along the lines of french toast for breakfast, you will be disappointed. But if you need that super sweet kick in the morning, which I’ll admit I do. I like my breakfast to taste like dessert, these things taste amazing in a smoothie. Load up on lots of yummy fruit, I like pineapple, banana, and blueberries, and ta-da! You have a super yummy, SWEET, and healthy way to start your day!
If you go the smoothie route, like I have been doing for the last few years now, I also love to add chia seeds, flax seeds, and almonds to my smoothies. The seeds are packed with vitamins and nutrients as well, and the almonds give you that healthy fat you need too. I also add some vanilla soy milk or almond milk to my smoothie. You honestly don’t need all those extras with the Naturade Vegan Smart shakes because they have all those vitamins and nutrients packed in them, but I think a little extra can’t hurt, so I still add them in. Also if you do go the plain route, try adding vanilla soy milk to the shake instead of water. That will help sweeten it up a bunch too!
Overall, I loved these shakes and will continue to use them. I love that they are low in sugar, and have a great dose of all the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and more that I need in my diet every single day! It keeps you full, satiates you, and tastes absolutely delicious in my morning smoothie! They have a variety of flavors to choose from so you can easily find your favorite! Best of all, they are 100% animal cruelty-Free!
