As a female, finding the right swimsuit can be an absolute mission. The first step in choosing the right swimsuit style is determining whether it’s suitable for your body shape and size. Then there’s colours, details and other bits and pieces to consider too. The right swimsuit should accentuate your best features, allow you to strut your stuff with confidence and make you feel 100% comfortable. But we all know that can be easier said than done!
Us ladies can easily spend hours, days or even weeks finding the perfect most flattering swimsuit for our individual body types – but choosing a swimsuit that’s right for your body type can make a dramatically amazing difference. Whilst there was a time when curvy women were forced to settle with stale, unflattering swimsuits; now there’s a range of seasonal styles and hot trends to suit every beauty.
So this summer or for your next winter tropical vacation, show off some skin in a swimsuit that’s perfectly cut in all the right places with confidence! Here’s a few flattering styles that will get you feeling gorgeous.
1. Colour-blocking Styles
Colour-blocking swimsuits are some of the most pleasing styles that suit every single body type. Taking over the beach and other summer hot spots; they are vibrant, fun and saturated with colour. Colour-blocking is a mix of usually 2-3 shades that work well together. The ‘strips’ of colours have a way of bringing out your best body features from beautiful curves, hot hips or bigger busts.
They’re renowned as the fun swimsuit styles because of their groovy mix of colours, but if neutral shades are more your thing you can still opt for classic black and white contrast pieces. Colour-blocking swimsuits come in a variety of styles from one pieces, bikinis, midkinis, tankinis and other plus sized swimwear.
2. Solid or Small Print Swimsuit Styles
Solid and small print swimsuit styles are ideal for not distorting body proportions, so they work perfectly for plus-sized women. Optical illusion prints are super flattering and can be combined with solid colours to create a stunning effect. Pieces like this work wonders in enhancing a slimmer effect.
Depending on your body type, opt for the solid colours where you want to appear slimmer, for example: if you have a rounder shape solid colours will work best on the bottom. For pear shaped women (small bust and larger hips and thighs), solid colours on the bottom will complement small prints on the top half and blend seamlessly together.
3. Comfort and Support
One of the most important factors to consider for women with curves is comfort and support. Bigger bust ladies will need to look for swimsuit styles with much more support than one with a shelf bra for adequate comfort and usually will be constructed of two inner and outer layers. For even more support, you can go for an underwired bra swimsuit style too. Avoid tops with thin straps as they won’t provide ample support.
Pear shaped women won’t need as much support in the bust area. If your midsection is larger and you want to draw attention away from the area you can do so by playing up the bust line or backside. For example: a one-piece swimsuit with a belt or contrasting pattern or colour will help to emphasise a curvy silhouette in a very flattering way. Work out which body type you are and this will give you a better idea about what swimsuit styles to go for.
4. Midkini and Tankinis
It wasn’t too long ago where we only had two types of swimwear – a one piece or a bikini, also known as a two-piece. These days though the options have boomed to midkinis and tankinis to ensure every body type can flaunt their stuff.
Tankinis are a two-piece swimsuit style that combines a tank top with a bikini bottom. Perfect for bigger bust women that need support or apple body shapes, the tankini can tone down your tummy and bust area with material or tassels whilst highlighting your hips, butt and legs.
The midkini sits on the line between bikinis and tankinis. Whilst it doesn’t offer as much waist coverage as the tankini, it has better coverage that the traditional bikini making it ideal for bustier women. Midkinis provide ample support whilst looking very flattering.
5. Cut-Outs and Sheer Inserts
Cut-outs and sheer inserts put a spin onto any standard swimsuit style by adding a unique sense of fabulous. They’re super stylish and show off a bit of skin without giving you that self-conscious feeling. As the name suggests, these styles are full piece swimsuits with cut-outs that flaunt your skin or cut-outs that have sexy sheer inserts of illusion fabric for a little more privacy.
They have a level of sexiness to them that’s not over the top but attracts interest in all the right places. You can opt for full-on slashes, or just a sliver of skin in a one-piece. Both styles come in a huge variety of flavours, support and comfort.
6. Sporty Summer Delights
The sporty look is becoming a huge trend and one that’s not going to slow down any time soon. So, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that athletic-themed swimsuit styles are booming. Keep your eyes peeling for one-piece suits with zipper-trims to reveal and cover up what you want or surf-influenced rash guards as a tankini top to tone your stomach and waist area.
Be a plus-sized beauty doesn’t mean your swimsuit options are limited – there’s an appealing style to make every body type feel and look fabulous for the summer sun.
