Coral Chung recognized this and sought to change it by establishing a new company, Senreve, that’s focused on asking women what they truly want and need.

Only after the company had these answers did it proceed with the design and development of its handbags. This strategy led to Senreve quickly gaining a reputation throughout the fashion industry.

The Story Behind Senreve

Coral Chung recognized a void in the market for desirable and functional handbags. Through her background in the tech sector, she had knowledge of big data and SaaS, and her experience and education helped identify tools that were not being used to their potential.

Companies had data on women, but Coral Chung came to the realization that their actual voices were not being appropriately accounted for. And yet, women were being targeted by the extraordinarily wealthy marketing departments of well-known brands. Chung surmised that women’s needs were not being fulfilled, and the best way to go about meeting them was to ask women directly. That’s how Senreve began, and it’s what made the company so successful over a short period.

The Adventure of Bringing a New Idea to Market

Innovation is as much about new ideas as it is about technology and products. Coral Chung has alluded to this fact when describing how she felt about taking her chances as an entrepreneur. She had already succeeded in the tech sector, and at the time, her employer was about to go public. Still, she chose to risk it all for a new venture.

The opportunity would need to be quite special for Coral Chung to choose risk over stability, and this was the case with Senreve. Her previous subpar experience with handbags directly inspired her—she knew firsthand that the product the company would be offering was both needed and desired by the consumer. 

Even with the apparent need for a company like Senreve, most people would have still chosen stability over risk. Not Chung. The data showed an opportunity, and she was overwhelmed by a need to be creative, which her old job lacked. Sure, she was advancing her skills, particularly when it came to practical applications in analytics, but Chung had a vision that was far grander than her old path.

Becoming an Iconic Brand

The name Senreve harbors deep meaning. It comes from combining the words “sense” and “dream.” When Coral Chung talks about her vision, this is precisely the feeling she exudes. Inspiration was a big reason why Coral Chung and her partners chose to pursue this venture. Yes, there was a need to be filled. And yes, existing handbags were severely lacking. This is how Senreve blossomed into the iconic brand that it is today. Women now find the same sort of inspiration that Chung and her partners did, and they are doing it with their own voice. Before this, Chung had been at the precipice of another opportunity at a promising pre-IPO company. She believed enough in the potential of Senreve to pursue her own startup.
