Four Tips That Can Improve Indoor Air Quality

When we think of air pollution, more often than not we think of the air outside of our homes, typically in the industrial zone.

Most people think of their homes as being a sort of temple that nothing harmful can get in to; so it’s extremely rare that we associate air pollution and poor air quality with the air inside our home sweet home.

Unfortunately, the indoor air quality of our homes can prove to be harmful to our health if not pure enough as allergies, asthma, and upper respiratory infections can all be a result of poor air quality.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to improve your indoor air quality. Read on to learn more:

1. Clean Your Air Filters.

Regardless of the type of HVAC system you have, it’s imperative that you routinely clean your air filters. Air filters keep dirt, dust, allergens, and irritants out of the circulated air in your home, but when the filter becomes packed with old contaminants there is no room to trap the new contaminants floating around. It also presents an opportunity for trapped allergens to get forced out of your HVAC and be circulated back through your air.

2. Use a Dehumidifier and/or an Air Purifier.

As we’ve all learned at one point or another in our life, any humid and hot environment is a breeding ground for bacteria, making a dehumidifier the perfect option for any areas of your home where this might be a risk. Whether it’s your basement or your living room during the winter months, a dehumidifier can greatly reduce the creation of air contaminants just waiting to be inhaled. Similarly, an air purifier will take the air, remove the harmful particles, and circulate it back into your home.

3. Clean Your Carpets Regularly.

Carpets and rugs can be home to dust mites, trapped dirt, and allergens, and you can double this if you have indoor pets. Vacuuming carpets regularly with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum filter is a must. In high traffic areas, it’s important to vacuum over the area more than once to ensure that all the dirt and germs that have been packed to the bottom are sucked up.

4. Reduce the use of Chemicals.

These days, there are so many organic options for every aspect of our lives – including house cleaners. While sometimes a good Lysol spray is needed, other greener options are available for everyday cleaning. There are also many DIY cleaners you can make with normal household ingredients that can be just as effective in cleaning and disinfecting your home.

Indoor air quality is something that should be a high priority for every homeowner, and if you’ve been unconcerned about your indoor air pollution and quality, now is the time to change your thinking! After all, there is no such thing as being too late when dealing with your health and the health of your family.
