How to Best Protect Your Home From Burglary and Theft

Its not often that I write about topics other than fashion and beauty, but life actually does revolve around things other than just fashion and beauty sometimes. I know, gasp! I recently bought my first home this last fall, and as anyone who owns a home knows, there can be a lot of work involved. My home is a little older and that couldn’t be more dead on with my home. I’ve run into a few problems here and there in the 5 months I’ve been in it, but still wouldn’t trade it for going back to renting. Although with its stress and extra costs, of owning a home, comes a sense of pride. And I have truly loved that feeling.

Wether you own a home or not, we all want to protect our valuables. I come from a small town and tend to not worry about break ins, as I’ve never really experienced anything like that. But about a year ago, my best friends home was broken into and unfortunately a lot of her valuable stuff was taken, and some of her lovely home was beat up in the process too. This was a huge eye opener for me. I normally tend to have a lot of faith and trust in the world, and generally expect the best out of people. But it only took one experience like this for me to really get my wake up call. I’ve since become much better about locking up my house at night and before I leave.

ometimes though, locking up is just not enough. Yet another experience opened my eyes last summer when my car was vandalized, right there in the driveway to my home! I freaked out and immediately started shopping for monitors and cameras to put outside my house as well to keep an eye out on things!

Thankfully now days, there are lots of things we can do to help protect our homes. Security systems are widely available, as is camera and monitoring equipment to monitor both whats going on inside and outside of your home.

When my incident happened, I didn’t know where to turn, and when some thing like that happens, it’s really too late anyway. The misfortune has already happened, so its important to be prepared right now,  to hopefully prevent anything like that from happening. And if it does, then hopefully you already had the equipment you needed installed to help catch the perp!

iluselectronics.com offers a great range of products to help protect your home. They offer a great selection of monitors, telephone and video intercom systems, remote activated electric locks, timer delays, you name it, they got it! There is absolutely no reason you can’t be prepared, Ilus Electronics makes it so easy.

Here are some tips I’ve learned for keeping your house safe:

– Burglars tend to not be scared away by The signs you get from your Home Security System, as they know most of us tend to be too lazy to turn them on anyway.

– One of the best things you can do is display a “Beware of Dog” sign wether you have a dog or not. Most Burglars aren’t going to mess with a home with a barking dog that will wake the owners.

– Think burglaries don’t happen in the middle of the day? Think again. (In fact, my best friend was robbed while at work). Lock up your house before leaving, consider leaving a TV or radio on.

– Burglars also tend to look for homes with lots of trees and shrubbery, making it easy for them to sneak around the side of the house, or to the back, looking for a window they can enter in without any neighbors noticing. Make sure your windows and doors aren’t surrounded by shrubbery making it easy for them to hide in.

– Lastly, make sure you always keep windows and doors locked. Burglars are going to look for an easy way in, so make it as hard as possible for them to pick your house to break into.

  1. I’m always worried to some extent about burglars because I hear of other break ins in the area. We have 2 dogs and a beware of dogs sign is a great idea.

  2. These are good tips. We had a dog who barked at everything, and her bark sounded vicious, even though she wasn’t. She passed away, and our dog now NEVER barks, so we no longer have our “security system.” I think these electronic system are a great idea.

  3. My .38 snub-nose and .22 Ruger is about as close to home protect system as I have. Someone would be crazy to come in my house. I like this system too, but a little on the expensive side for something you may never need.

  4. Great tips! I once left my home and returned 15 minutes later because I had forgotten something, and walked in to find my sliding back door wide open and a few things missing! The police said we most likely walked in on the person, and didn’t even know it. They took a game system, a collectors knife, and a couple other things that were right by that back door. It was a pretty terrifying experience.

  5. Break-ins are really scary. My parents had several when I was a toddler, and even though I was so young, I still remember how freaked out everyone was! In many areas, home invasions are on the rise (we just had one in our town this weekend), so having a good security system is important. The alarms will alert me if anyone tries to get in. If they make it in…well, then they’ll meet my little friend that I keep ready. I will protect my family.

  6. Yikes! In your driveway! I had a friend whose home was robbed, but fortunately they received all of their property back. My BIL was robbed in a home invasion. We have a lot of the things mentioned, but I would like some form of camera.

  7. These are great tips. We actually do have a dog – a HUGE dog, and I do think that helps, but you’re right, you still have to take precautions! My friend’s car was stolen FROM HER DRIVEWAY last month! Her neighborhood isn’t too far from here! It’s crazy!

  8. these are a great idea. We were burgled once and it was a truly horrible experiance – The only good thing was that we had already sold the house and were in the process of moving, so we didn’t have to stay there

  9. We got broken into a few years ago & we immediately got an alarm system. They kicked open our door while we were at work & stole stuff like booze & piggy banks. It was not much but enough to leave us feeling violated & unsafe. Great tips.

  10. I live in a small town, but that doesn’t excuse me from theft and burglary. Thanks for the tips, I really need to watch when I go out front and leave the door unlock like I used to when I was a kid.

  11. All great tips and sounds like something I need. We’ve had kids/teenagers try to vandalize our house and try to open our doors and stuff. I am not sure why since we don’t do anything but keep to ourselves, but i imagine it has something to do with the previous owners possibly telling them the house is haunted.
