Overcoming addiction is never easy, and if you have made it past the darkest days of your life, congratulations because you did it. Recovery is just half the battle because, after sobriety, you need to keep clean in your habits, diet, thoughts, and actions. Reentry to homelife and work life begins, and it’s during this stage when you are on your own that you are the most vulnerable.
Temptations are everywhere, but a determined mind and heart will not give in. There are several ways you can cope with stress at work, home, and life in general, so you don’t need to keep coming back to the black hole that is your former addiction. Here are some tips to help you live a healthy lifestyle.
Mindful Eating
You have constantly been told to eat three full square meals a day, but what about for meals when you’re just not hungry? It’s a waste of perfectly good food, and it will especially feel bad if you made it from scratch only to realize later that you can’t eat everything on your plate. A healthy diet is always a good thing, but what you should incorporate is mindfulness.
Mindful eating means to eat only when you’re hungry. Taking into account the ingredients you use and how you prepare it also helps. If you’re a fast eater, consider slowing down and savoring every bite so you can take in the taste, sight, and smell.
Focus On Getting Enough Sleep
Sufficient sleep is necessary for the human body, and when you deprive yourself of a good night’s rest, it will affect your energy levels the next day. It can lead to bad moods, headaches, and general crankiness. When you have succeeding days of no sleep, it can lead to addiction relapse especially alcoholism or substance abuse.
You need to rest your body so that it can repair itself and you can continue recovering. Experts say that you need seven to eight hours of sleep every night. If you’re a night owl, you can sleep during the day. If you need to sleep during the day, make sure that your sleep environment is peaceful.
System Cleanse
If you’ve only been recently sober, you may still be dealing with the unwanted side effects of withdrawal. Detoxification is a powerful way to get rid of the toxins you’ve accumulated in your body. This is crucial for when you are on your way to getting your life together by applying for jobs and generally reintegrating into society.
There are government-assisted detox programs and support groups that you can join. If you want to take matters into your own hands or want to rid of traces of toxins in a short amount of time due to a job-mandated drug test, consider getting a detox supplement. Not only will it help cleanse your saliva, blood, and urine, but it will also provide your body with dietary fiber, minerals, and vitamins. It works fast and is all-natural, so you don’t need to worry about introducing a new harmful thing to your system.
Get Physical
Not everyone can afford to go to the gym, but something as simple as doing walks or running can be beneficial. When you tire yourself from physical activities, your time and energy are put to good use, and then you won’t have either for going back to destructive behaviors.
Exercise can stimulate your brain and helps reduce your craving for illicit substances. Make it a habit to stick to a regular exercise schedule so you can train your body to be stronger and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
You Owe It to Yourself
Your choice to be sober once and for all came from a place where you have taken a good look at yourself. It was you who put a stop on tailspinning to destruction. Take all the help you need because family and friends who truly care for you will want you to be better.
You owe it to yourself to get better every day. The challenges won’t stop but know that life is more beautiful than you think and you can always hold on to hope that your baby steps will help you reach your goals.
