Chances are, no matter what hair type you have, you’ve had to deal with frizz, especially if you happen to deal with humidity where you live. It’s truly a universal challenge. Have you ever wondered why we get frizz in the first place? The team of experts at Madison Reed has compiled a guide of everything you need to know about frizz, and how best to tame it. Read on to find out how to beat the Frizz this summer!
Why All the Frizz?
So first things first, why do we even get frizz? Well, your hair is made up of three layers and thousands of cells. The hair’s outer layer, called the cuticle, looks kind of like a shingled roof. When hair is smooth, the shingles lie flat. But when a brush is run through dry hair, those “shingles” get lifted. Frizz is obviously most prominent with curly and coily hair, but it can take over straight or wavy hair, as well. So what can we do to fight the frizz?
Styling Process
Be sure to always use a heat protectant or blow dry serums whenever heat-styling your hair. Otherwise, it will become much more prone to drying out. Many products that claim to fight frizz only work temporarily by coating the hair cuticle with silicone. This doesn’t fix the root cause and can make the hair even even drier and frizzier in the long run.
Hair Color with Ammonia
If you use hair color with ammonia, your chances of developing frizz are higher. Ammonia increases hair porosity, which weakens hair, and causes frizz and split ends, something none of us want. Although hair color with ammonia may seem appealing due to the often low price, your hair will suffer in the long run. This is one of the many reasons why Madison Reed has removed harsh chemicals—including ammonia, resorcinol, PPD, sulfates and gluten—from their hair color, without ever sacrificing quality. They’ve even added hair-fortifying and protecting ingredients to their formulas, like argan oil, keratin, and ginseng root, to help support their customers’ pursuit of beautiful, healthy hair.
