One of the questions I often get as a stylist and fashion blogger is how to easily transition an outfit from day to night. Many of us are on the go, and working full-time jobs and don’t have the time or energy to make the commute to run home and change for dinner or happy hour. Being the fabulous fashionista’s we are, we certainly do not want to go out in our work attire either!
Dressing for day-to-night can actually be way easier than you think. You don’t have to pack a bag of clothes (that often end up wrinkled anyway!) to take to work to change after you clock out, in order to be ready for cocktails. It usually just involves switching up a few accessories, but you can use other pieces like a jacket to totally transform your look too!
6 Tips for Dressing from Day to Night
1. Pick a dress or top and skirt combo that is work-appropriate (at least when covered up with a blazer) but that is chic enough for cocktails. Stick to dresses and skirts long enough in length so it’s appropriate for day, but that has something special up top, like either an open back or chic camisole or lovely halter-top straps. 2. When dressing for work, pair with a blazer or work appropriate jacket. If you’re running errands, go for a fun denim jacket, which will make your dress look more daytime. Don’t be afraid to pair with sneakers! Stick to pumps for the office. 3. Bring some gorgeous stilettos to change into after work. 4. If it’s cold out, change out of your office appropriate hosiery into some fun printed or fishnet tights that are eye-catching and sure to make a statement. 5. Change your laptop bag out for a dazzling small clutch. Nothing says night time like the right (small) handbag or clutch! 6. Pick jewelry that dazzles in the office and out on the town. Pick delicate beautiful pieces that aren’t too much for the work day, but will stand out against your LBD for nighttime! I love these fun Gold Arrow Earrings, V pendant necklace, and this statement-making Gold Byzantine bracelet from JTV.com
It really is that simple to transition your look from day to night! Just be sure to pre-plan your outfit the night before so you can coordinate the right jewelry, shoes, handbag, accessories, and jacket to go with your look- both for daytime and for nighttime!
Here, I’ve styled my LBD for a casual daytime look with a denim jacket and fun eye-catching tights.
For daytime, I lose the jacket and go with a fun pair of stilettos and snake print spiked knuckles clutch.
