You Don’t Have to Be Afraid of At-Home Color Any More: Cover Your Gray

It’s unfortunate that age brings on gray hairs. Especially when you start to realize how impossibly expensive it is to keep them covered up!

I’m a complete lazy girl when it comes to my beauty routine, especially my hair. Yeah I may be a beauty blogger, but I don’t want to fork out the hundreds of dollars every couple months to get my hair colored, not to mention the hours of sitting in the chair! So boring! So I do what any girl does when she would rather save herself some money and time: I pluck out the grays as I see them come in!

Sure that works for awhile, maybe even several years, but sooner or later, those nasty hairs are going to start coming in much thicker, and be way too much work or pain to just keep plucking!

Luckily, I came across an amazing product built just for the lazy girl who would like to save herself time as well as money! While I may not have drones of gray hair coming in yet (Thank god!) I did make the mistake of getting highlights a few months back and they’ve completely grown out. Actually, I love the blonde highlights, don’t get me wrong, but as I said before, I’m a lazy girl and you can bet I’ve made no appointment to get back into that salon chair for root touch ups!

Cover Your Gray offers super affordable, super easy products you can use to yes, cover up the thick clumps of gray coming in, or like me, you can use it to disguise some highlights that may have grown out too!

The great thing about these products, are they are designed specifically to make it easy on you. I’ll admit, when I signed up for this review, I thought to myself a little later, “Oh Crap, what have I done! I don’t want to go near my hair with some hair dye!” I may be a lazy girl, but I’m completely terrified of dying my own hair. Which is exactly why I was completely relieved to see my Cover Your Gray Products when they arrived! No scary boxes of dye, no messes, no cleanup, and no risk either!

I got to try three awesome hair and root touch up products from Cover Your Gray. As you can see here, they look completely harmless, and they are! BUT they will cover up those grays, add some nice color to your hair, look completely natural (even work with those highlights!) and last up to 3 washes too!

I personally love that it’s not permanent except up to 3 washes. I felt instantly relieved as soon as I opened it up to apply it to my hair. If you do mess up, no worries, although honestly these products are pretty fool-proof. If the at-home-hair-dying virgin can do it (ME!), then I know anyone can!

I ordered my root and hair touch ups in the blonde to be able to work it in with my highlights. (It comes in all hair colors!) Here I used the hair color touch up pencil. You can actually glide this down your hair over the grays, if you have more gray hair then just coming in at the roots. The pencil is super easy to use, as you can imagine. I just held it up against my hair, pulled my hair taut, and glided the pencil down from root to ends. It was completely easy and I could see color right away! I then smoothed it out with my fingers, and blended it into my hair, making it look completely natural. Then it just needed a good brushing to smooth it all out! The color shows up right away so you can see exactly where it’s going and what it’s going to look like. This product literally took only minutes to do, and voila! That was it! My hair was done! It also washed right off my hands! Completely mess-free product!

Here you can see where I glided the blonde touch up pencil down my highlights to even them out with the roots (where I really needed the color) with the Pencil:

For my next treatment, I decided to attack my roots and also try out the brush hair touch up as well. Again you glide this brush down your hair like the pencil to get smooth, even application of color, covering your grays and leaving your hair to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your hair that was lucky enough to not turn gray (yet!)

The mascara-type wand was a little trickier to use. I found I did a better job if I clipped the rest of my hair up and out of the way, as the wand can get caught in other surrounding hair (hair that you may not want colored).

I once again held my hair taut, and glided the wand down from roots to end. It did a great job of depositing color evenly. I found it actually put out more color quicker than the pencil. I smoothed over the colored hair with my fingers again to blend in the color, and also drying the application a bit, so I could walk out the door! I was done in minutes once again, and the color washed off my hands no problem at all!

The root touch up was my favorite, because it’s what I needed the most. I used this blonde wand to blend in my highlights, since they have grown out about 3 inches. I was amazed with how well this worked. I just brushed in light short strokes from the roots to where my highlights started, and then blended with my fingers to help soak in the product and blend the color with my hair. I found this was an absolute breeze to do! Again only taking minutes, I went around the roots of my hair, adding highlighted roots to match up with my highlights throughout my hair.

Upon completion, as you can imagine, this stuff is a little thicker and heavier, especially if you’re using it in big chunks of hair like I was, to add highlights. I tousled my hair a bit and added some hairspray to bring back some volume and lightness to my hair. If you keep up with applying this to gray hairs as soon as they come in, you wont have this problem though, as you won’t need as much product to apply to the roots. I had 3 inches of hair to cover around the whole top of my hair so it may have been a bit much. But I found that it worked perfectly never the less! My hair looked like I had highlight root touch ups done, and lucky for me, will keep this lazy girl from having to go back to the salon for a bit longer! cover your gray root touch up-waterproof

Before/After Using the Cover Your Gray Root Touch Up in Blonde:root touch up before and after

As you can see here,  you can really see how well these tools deposit color to the hair easily, mess-free, and how it really does look amazingly natural! Even for adding highlights like I did here!

I’ve absolutely loved using these products and found they worked fabulously for covering random gray hairs I would find too! This is certainly a great go-to product I will use for many years to come, especially as more and more gray hair comes in and it becomes harder to handle. These lovely products make it a cinch to add quick cover up so you can head out the door and not have to worry! They do indeed last up to 3 washes too! My “highlights” faded a bit after a wash or too, but still showed enough color that it looked completely natural with the rest of my hair. Even when you do have to touch your hair up again after several washes, it takes only minutes to do, and is so completely hassle-free, it’s totally worth it! I feel less worrisome using these fabulous products for sure too, as you really can’t mess it up! Even if you did, you can just quickly wash it out with a wet hand towel.

Overall, I have had an amazing experience with the Cover Your Gray root and hair touch up line, and I know I will be using it for years to come! This saves me from having to get into the messy dies, or even worse, having to pay big bucks and waste lots of time having my hair colored at the salon. I love that I can even use this for extending my highlights too, as well as covering those unwanted grays when they do come in!
