Nontoxic Cleaning for Homes with Kids & Pets

House cleaning your home is a necessity—but you don’t have to use toxic and harmful cleaners. Here are a few of our favorite ways to clean your home thoroughly and regularly using nontoxic methods and cleaners to keep your home safe for your kids and pets.

Ingredients to Avoid

There are plenty of chemicals that are legal for use in cleaning products in the U.S. but are harmful to adults and children with allergies, asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis, and more. So it’s safer to avoid them altogether.

Be sure to check your product labels for the most harmful ingredients in cleaning products, below.

  • 1,4-Dioxane is a suspected carcinogen.
  • 2-Butoxyethanol (2-BE) is a known skin and eye irritant.
  • Tricoslan is linked to endocrine disruption, lower levels of thyroid hormone, and resistance to antibiotics.
  • Bleach is connected with several neurological and respiratory issues, possibly even cancer.
  • Perchloroethylene (PERC) is a probable carcinogen.
  • Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.
  • Fragrance, a common ingredient in many cleaners, can contain harmful substances and cause irritation.

Choose Natural and Nontoxic Cleaners

Using natural and nontoxic ingredients is important because kids, and especially pets, can still suffer from all-natural products that are not necessarily nontoxic. For example, some essential oils are harmful to pets. They only irritate humans but wreak havoc on your pet’s health.

As long as the product you choose is marked as natural and nontoxic, your pets and kids should be safe. Avoid letting them come in direct contact with these products, storing them safely where your little ones cannot reach them.

Key Takeaways

As you can see, it’s quite easy to clean your home in a way that’s safe for both your kids and your pets. By using natural, nontoxic cleaning products, and other similarly safe products, everyone will stay safe.

  1. It’s so important to read labels! Our pets can’t keep themselves safe from dangerous cleaning products so we have to do it for them.
