StandOut Pieces & 6 Style Tips for Men this Fall

Being on the dating scene this last year, I was surprised to hear how often men say they struggle with fashion. To be Honest, I don’t think most really do, I think they feel a little caught off guard and maybe even a little intimidated when I tell them what I do for a living. I’ve styled some men over the years who I think oftentimes just struggled more with looking put together than really having their own style (or any style).

Men’s fashion is so much less complicated than women’s and just a few simple tips can make putting together a great look very easy and effortless too.

Here are some of my tips for Styling Tips for Men:

  1. Wear what’s comfortable. If you don’t like the way you look in it, you won’t wear it. Make sure it’s something you love and feel like you look great in! Not good, but GREAT!
  2. Save the sneaker for the gym and go for a Boot. While there are some sneakers that look good dressed up (go for all black) more often than not it’s going to dress down your look and make you look less put together. A boot is a great piece for fall that will be comfortable and warm, and it goes with everything! Boots look great with jeans and trousers!
  3. You can don the T-shirt but you better add a nice sweater, cardigan, or blazer to it for a night out. Personally, the T-shirt and blazer with jeans is one of my favorite looks for evening. If you don’t have a blazer, go for a nicer jacket or polo. I love this blue Tommy Hilfiger hoodie from Stand-Out.net. V-neck t-shirts and solid colors look less casual and more put together too. Save the graphic tees for day time.
  4. A nice button-down is a must. I know this is where I find most resistance with men, but a button-down is a must-have for any men’s wardrobe, whether you work in the office or not! You don’t have to wear it so formal. Leave it untucked, roll the sleeves, and don’t button the top button unless you will be wearing a tie with it. The button down doesn’t have to look formal, wear it casually with your favorite pair of jeans or shorts and you’ll find it adds some instant style to your look.
  5. Find a great jean that fits you well. A darker color always looks more dressed-up for a night out. Stick with the lighter colors for day, or wear it with a blazer for evening, to give it some style.
  6. My Golden Rule: Wear something more casual with something more dressed up. This will instantly give you some amazing style without looking like you’re trying too hard or that you’re headed to a board meeting. If you’re wearing a casual short or jean, wear something more formal up top like a nice fitted sweater, button-down, leather jacket, or blazer jacket. Going for the nice trouser? Here’s where you can pair it with a sneaker so your look is cool and casual, and not stuffy.
