Summer is on its way, and so is Memorial Day. As we prepare to celebrate our freedoms and to thank those who have risked their own lives to preserve them, finding the right decorations to symbolize this significant day can feel completely daunting. In this article, we discuss six unique Memorial Day decorations for your celebratory events.
1. Red, White, and Blue Colors
Gather up decorations that are of red, white, and blue colors. You can easily find banners, flags, bows, and other fabric décor items at your local craft store to create DIY decorations for cheap.
For more formal gatherings, take these colors to the kitchen and celebrate with patriotic-themed dishware and napkins.
If you’re having an outdoor barbeque, get outdoor plates and cups that showcase these colors to really make a statement. You can even buy little American flags to stick into your burgers instead of toothpicks! For ways to decorate your food, consider these patriotic chocolate recipes or this unicorn frappe recipe to wow your Memorial Day party guests.
2. Celebratory Décor Items
Go nuts with throw pillows. Find some with American flags, fireworks, etc. If you’re someone who likes to crochet, you might consider stitching together patriotic pillows for the day. If you’re hosting an event outside, get red, white, and blue umbrellas or American flag-themed umbrellas to create a festive feel for the holiday.
3. Get Celebratory Flowers
Continuing with the red-white-and-blue theme, get some Memorial Day flowers to signify the day. Look for red, white, and blue carnations or the same colors in roses for a brilliant display of color and consistency.
Make sure that your flowers (and you!) stay hydrated on Memorial Day if you plan to spend time outside. Add ribbons in celebratory colors to continue with the theme even more.
4. The Simple Ribbon
Ribbons are so versatile. Tie some to your fences or onto your porch to send a positive statement about Memorial Day. Get creative and look for ribbons in all shapes and sizes. Get a variety to create an exciting display inside or outside of your home.
Ribbons are also highly cost-effective for decorations. You can expect to pay under $10 at most craft and home goods stores for a large supply of such items. That’s a bargain!
5. Decorate Your Yard
Decorate your front yard with outdoor décor items and American flags. Get a banner that says “Happy Memorial Day” in balloon letters and drape it over your front door. Buy a few pinwheels in red, white, and blue to stick into the soil in your garden. All of these little decorations add up to one positive statement for Memorial Day. No decoration is insignificant.
6. Decorate Your Car
Take some of the suggestions mentioned and apply them to your car! Get some car-friendly window markers and write, “Happy Memorial Day!” on the back window to catch others’ attention. Just be sure that your decorations don’t block your view while driving or interfere with the driving of others on the road.
As long as you consider your decorations carefully, however, there is no reason you can’t go all-out for Memorial Day on wheels! Tape an American Flag to your flatbed or put some patriotic stickers on your bumper. The possibilities are endless.
At first, it can seem overwhelming to come up with creative ways to decorate for Memorial Day. As long as you show your pride for the significance of the holiday, you can’t go wrong with red, white, and blue. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and create your decorations from scratch!
