Getting your 3 servings of fish in a week? No?! Well, being a vegetarian, I certainly am not either. But the truth is, our bodies need those healthy fats, and while we can get them from other sources such as avocados, olive oil, and nuts, unless you live on an island where fish is your main source of food, you’re probably not getting enough omega 3’s. Most Americans aren’t.
You could call me the supplement queen because rather than try to figure out each and every little thing I should be eating each day (you would think vegetables, fruit, grains, and a source of protein would be enough!) are bodies need lots of vitamins and minerals that we just aren’t getting enough of from our diet. This is exactly why I just like to put my mind at ease and take a daily supplement instead.
The Omega 3 supplement is one I’ve taken for most of my adult life. I knew at a young age that there was no way I was going to eat enough fish, so I should probably just start purchasing a daily omega 3 supplement. Among many things including your heart, blood, and brain, healthy fats from Omega 3’s are great for good skin and hair. Also, something I just learned from one of my besties – her Opthamologist told her that taking quality fish oil supplement regularly also helps with dry eye! It helps the oil glands at the base of the lashes provide moisturization to the eye!
Over the years I’ve also learned that not all Omega 3 Fish Oil supplements are created equal either. In fact, there are actually a ton of really bad ones out there that are virtually doing you no good. They don’t contain enough DHA to be absorbed into the body, so that $30 you just spend on your month supply, well you pretty much just threw that money down the toilet. Sorry, but you kinda did.
When you start taking a fish oil supplement daily (and you should!) research what’s out there before purchasing. Read the ingredients first and make sure it’s got more DHA than EPA. An Ideal ratio is 3:2. You will quickly find that most brands have much less DHA than EPA in their fish oil, and that is simply because it is much less expensive for them to manufacture. But those cheap omega 3 supplements are going to do you virtually no good, so its wise to invest in a better brand that contains more DHA.
